Fort Rucker became the center of Army Aviation Training when all Army Aviation flight training was consolidated here in 1973. It is also the home of the 1st Aviation Brigade and teaches everything from initial entry rotary-wing courses to advanced courses in aviation safety. Air Force helicopter pilots have trained here since 1971 as well as students from more than 60 foreign countries.

The post covers 64,500 acres of southeast Alabama countryside in an area known as the Wiregrass, named for a wild grass peculiar to our region. Fort Rucker and the Fort Rucker area is an excellent place to work and live.  It supports a daytime population of 19,000, including about 8,000 people in uniform, 7,000 civilian and contract employees, and 3,800 military family members. Fort Rucker offers all the amenities of a small town, including top medical care and employment assistance.

Fort Rucker is lucky to include Lake Tholocco, a 640-acre facility that offers a full range of recreation activities. You can take your pick from swimming, boating, camping, RV parking, volleyball, basketball, and hiking.  Pavilion and beaches are available for all to use.  Fishing and Boating activities of all types are allowed year round. 

Fort Rucker also includes The Silver Wings Golf Course, a 27-hole championship golf course rated at par 72, for 18 holes, by the USGA.  The Bowling Center provides twenty lanes with automatic scorers, a pro shop, lockers, shoe rental, snack bar and video games.

The United States Army Aviation Museum maintains a collection of over 160 military aircraft, including one of the largest collections of military helicopters in the world.  Public  galleries represent the Army's involvement in aviation from the beginning days of the Wright brothers and early combat aircraft from World War I, to the highly technological machines flown by Army Aviators today.
